Multinational companies jointly develop new technologies for butadiene production

on June 3, BASF's improved red phosphorus flame retardant was added with metal hydroxide and Linde, and the two companies announced that they would cooperate to develop new technologies for butadiene production. On June 13, it was also reported that UOP, a subsidiary of Honeywell, would cooperate with TPC group to improve the technology of oxo-d butene to butadiene process domestically. The reason why multinational companies compete to develop new technologies for butadiene production lies in the market shortage

the reduction of butadiene production caused by the lightweight of cracking raw materials must be actively dealt with for the chemical industry. The vigorous development of shale gas in North America has enabled more American ethylene cracking plants to use cheap light hydrocarbons such as ethane as cracking raw materials, thus reducing the production cost of ethylene by nearly half compared with naphtha method. However, this process has created a prominent problem - butadiene cannot be produced by-product

at present, more than 60% of ethylene production units in North America mainly use light raw materials, while the consumption of ethane in 33 cracking units in the Gulf of Mexico accounts for about 80% of the consumption of ethane in the United States. According to the prediction of relevant institutions, the amount of ethane used in ethylene plants will increase by 75% by 2017, while the new butadiene capacity of traditional process in the United States will be almost zero in the next four years, which will further increase the supply gap of butadiene in the United States. In fact, since 2007, the butadiene production of cracking units in the United States has decreased by more than 20%

at present, the United States needs to import about 350000 tons of butadiene every year. By 2020, the demand for butadiene in the United States will increase to 2.4 million tons and the import volume will increase to 525000 tons. The tight supply of butadiene is not limited to the United States. According to the prediction of IHS chemical company, from 2013 to 2018, the growth rate of global butadiene demand will exceed the growth rate of production, and the shortage of butadiene supply cannot be underestimated according to the market development center

changes in market supply and demand have also led to sharp fluctuations in butadiene prices in the international market in recent years. The highest price was $3858/ton in August 2011, and the lowest price was $610/ton in June 2009. In April this year, the market price of butadiene has climbed from US $1190/ton in December last year to US $1499/ton

according to Honeywell's research, in the next ten years, if the lightening of ethylene cracking raw materials is limited to North America, the world butadiene supply may be only 7%. If the ethylene cracking industry in Europe and Asia also tends to lighten raw materials, the butadiene supply gap will be as high as 27%. The problem of supply shortage must be solved by technical means, and multinational companies have made choices
